    Carleton Village is a quiet west end neighbourhood that was designated as a historical district by the City of Toronto in 1989. The area is mostly populated by Portuguese, Italian, and Asian families.


    This Toronto neighbourhood was named after Guy Carleton who served as the first Governor of Canada, in 1768. The spelling of Carleton Village has been with or without an “e” since the 1850’s. Today you can still see historical street markers in the Village spell Carleton without an “e”. The local public school spells Carleton with an “e”.

    During the 1860’s Carleton Village emerged as a prosperous railway and industrial centre. It was amalgamated with the Town of West Toronto in 1889 and then annexed by the City of Toronto in 1909. 

    Real Estate

    The real estate opportunities in this Toronto neighbourhood offers a variety of options. Some of the old labourers’ cottages on Old Weston Road were built in the 1850’s and 1860’s. A majority of Carleton Village homes were constructed in the 1880’s and 1920’s.

    The neighbourhood has a mix of detached, semi-detached, and attached Victorian-style homes. Some of these homes have front facades that have been refaced with new brick. It creates a modern look that is in sharp contrast to older homes in this area. 


    Those looking to shop in this area have different options to choose from. There are some national retail stores that are in the area around the intersection of Keele and St. Clair. The close distance to Carleton Village makes it more convenient for residents. 

    There is a local shopping district on St. Clair Avenue called St. Clair Gardens. It has a variety of shops and services as well as cosy cafes and restaurants. Davenport Road includes a number of convenience stores for residents located at the south end of the neighbourhood.

    Residents in all of the St. Clair West district are close to Earlscourt Park and the adjacent recreation centre. Their facilities have an indoor/outdoor pool, a gymnasium, an artificial ice rink, tennis courts, a seniors lounge and day care. Wadsworth Park is smaller and is perfect for young children as it has a wading pool and a playground. There is the St. Clair/Silverthorn branch of the Toronto Public Library which offers programs for children.


    Residents in this neighbourhood are served by the St. Clair streetcar and the Davenport bus. They connect commuters to stations on the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line. Carleton Village’s main arterial roadways are St. Clair Avenue and Davenport Road. Motorists used these roadways to access all parts of the city.
