The second wave of COVID-19 could be worse for long term care homes without additional staff

According to experts, the second wave of COVID-19 could be worse for the country’s most vulnerable communities if they don’t hire more trained workers for long term care homes.

Although long term care homes are a lot more prepared for the second wave, most of them are still short-staffed, which increases the risk of spreading the virus.

On Tuesday, Miranda Ferrier, president of the Canadian Support Workers Association, said: “If you look at the current situation in long-term care, you have one personal support worker caring for up to 15 residents per shift, if we have more staff, that means they’re working with a smaller group of residents, which means spread would not be as huge.”
