The Canadian maple syrup industry has gained international attention in recent days, as shortages have forced the country to tap into its strategic reserve. Quebec currently produces roughly 73 per cent of all maple syrup in the world. The organization Quebec Maple Syrup Producers said it will release about 22.7 million kilograms of maple syrup from its reserve by February.

For some people, this could have been shocking news to hear that Canada has a stockpile of maple syrup but CBC News explained how it works. The maple syrup industry is subject to a supply-management system, meaning it offers a quota system that the QMSP dictates its market volume. The QMSP controls the Global Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve, which can hold more than 45 million kilograms of maple syrup.

The reserve was constructed in 2000 to ensure a constant supply goes out nationally and internationally. The Laurierville Plant and Warehouse, in the Centre-du-Quebec region, covers an area of 24,805 square metres, the same size as five football fields. That one site alone can hold up to 25 million kilograms of maple syrup.
