As travel restrictions ease for fully vaccinated individuals, some Canadians are thinking of traveling abroad over the holidays. However, the added costs of COVID-19 tests, airfare, and car rental could make the trip more expensive. Airfare and car rental prices have been on the rise over the pandemic.

COVID-19 test requirements will be different depending on where you are travelling to. In some cases, you may have to take tests that can add hundreds of dollars to your trip. Some countries, such as Mexico and the Dominican Republic have no pre-arrival rest requirements for Canadian travellers. However, other countries such as Jamaica, Turks and Caicos, and the United States, require that international passengers provide proof of a negative COVID-19 antigen or molecular test.

Travellers can obtain a rapid antigen test in Canada for under $50. All Canadians have to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test to return home. Canada only accepts a molecular test which can cost between $150-$300.
