KOLLIDE, the Montreal start-up won a $550,000 grant from the National Football League(NFL) to improve its design of a new football helmet. The hope is to develop a helmet that will help reduce the risk of concussions during games. The start-up had no expertise in football helmets two years ago but managed to still win this grant.

KOLLIDE research coordinator Franck Le Naveaux said “Yes, it’s super exciting. We’re proud of this collaborative entrepreneurship spirit that we have in Quebec.” He further explained that the grant was more gratifying because the companies they were competing against had manufacturing experience. He also said it was challenging working on their designs and contributions independently and meeting only virtually for a period of time.

KOLLIDE which began its project in 2019 were not the only businesses selected to receive a grant. Two American companies, one in Denver, the other in Detroit, were also selected to receive funding. The competition they entered was called the $3million NFL Helmet Challenge.
