The Nunavik Sentinels program is resuming field work this summer after being on break from the pandemic. Located in Quebec’s Nunavik region the program is designed to assist with learning how to identify and collect butterflies. The program has a team of entomologists and researchers from the Montreal Insectarium.

In 2019, Siaja Parceaud-May spotted a peculiar critter in Ungava Bay that was sent to Montreal for more analysis. After more than a year, the insectarium director Maxim Larrivée confirmed that she had discovered a new subspecies of Colias tyche. The critter even govern the name: Colias tyche siaja. to honour her discovery.

After hearing the news, Parceaud-May said “I was alone at home when I found out and I was jumping. It’s king of like one of my dreams come true, … It’s kind of a sign that there may be other species that we don’t know about.“
