U.S. President Joe Biden and the first lady Jill Biden have added a new first puppy to the family, according to the first lady’s spokesperson. The new first puppy was spotted Monday playing on the South Lawn of the White House. Two sources that are familiar with the new pet said the dog looks to be a German Shepherd or a similar breed.

A source told CNN that the puppy was gifted to the president and his name is “Commander”. Micheal LaRosa, Jill Biden’s press secretary confirmed the news by saying “Yes. There is (a puppy),” Biden’s previous German Shepherd, Champ, passed away in June at the age of 13. They have another German Shepherd named Major who is a rescue.

Major has mostly been living in Wilmington, Delaware, to receive some training on how to behave in the White House. The rescue has had a handful of aggressive incidents involving staff at the White House. In March, Major bit one member of the Secret Service and a National Park Service Worker. Sightings of Major at the White House have not been too common but a dog fence was built on the White House property.
