Only two races into the Formula One season, defending champion Max Verstappen is already shaping a rivalry against Charles Leclerc. It is odd that the rivalry doesn’t include Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time F1 champion whose crown was taken by Verstappen. Verstappen and Leclerc are both 24-years-old and they have been rivals since their karting days.

On Sunday, they went wheel-to-wheel before Verstappen made a decisive pass three laps from the end of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. This victory is Verstappen’s first win of the season and the 21st of his career. After the race, Verstappen said “every battle is different, … It’s just smart racing and good racing. It was not easy but a lot of fun.”

Lance Stroll from Montreal finished in 13th and Toronto’s Nicholas Latifi did not finish. Lewis Hamilton was only able to get one point for Mercedes after finishing 10th. Hamilton said “It’s gutting but we’ll keep working hard and keep fighting, that’s all we can do, … We’re so far off the guys ahead. It feels like a long, long way away.”
