A world with net-zero emissions means that we are no longer adding heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Some of these gases can still be emitted, but they would have to be “cancelled out” by removing an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases. Canada has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 in order to fight climate change.

Some experts from the United Nations take the definition of net-zero even further by saying “Any remaining emissions must be reabsorbed, including by healthy oceans and forests.” The countries that signed the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change will meet for the COP26 summit. It will take place in Glasgow, Scotland from October 31 to November 12.

196 countries signed the 2015 Paris Agreement to commit to limiting global warming to well below 2 C and preferably 1.5 C. That means these countries will have to cut their greenhouse gas emissions that are linked to global warming.
