Most Canadian grocery stores offer pre-cooked poultry at a cheaper price compared to buying raw chicken. When you walk into almost every grocery store in Canada, you can smell it, juicy, tender rotisserie chicken. Larger chains in Canada will often offer pre-cooked birds at $8 to $12 and you don’t have to cook or clean up after.

The rotisserie has a lower price despite the additional cost of spices, packaging, labour and energy for the convenient meal. Many major chains declined to comment on pricing strategies for chickens except a smaller chain called Rowe Farms.

According to the store, it might look like you’re paying less for a cooked bird, but you’re usually getting a smaller chicken. Raw birds in the cooler section will usually weigh 1.6 and 1.8 kilograms and chickens cooked on the rotisserie are about 1.2 kg.
