3 scientist awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering hepatitis C

On Monday, British scientist Michael Houghton, and Americans Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering the hepatitis C virus.

The Nobel Committee explained that the men’s work identified a significant source of blood-borne hepatitis that couldn’t be explained by hepatitis A and B viruses, saving millions of lives.

“Thanks to their discovery, highly sensitive blood tests for the virus are now available, and these have essentially eliminated post-transfusion hepatitis in many parts of the world, greatly improving global health,” the committee said.
