What a another wave could mean for the hardest-hit corporate sector

Business groups announced that another economic shutdown could be disastrous for Canada’s most vulnerable sectors; the government is receiving pressure to implement more restrictions to fight the coronavirus’s second wave.

On Monday, Ontario had 700 new COVID-19 cases, urging the Ontario Hospital Association to call on the province to go back to Phase 2 of its reopening plan, which would mean the closing down of dining rooms and theaters and gyms.

According to Restaurant Canada, going back to phase 2 would likely cause massive closures in the restaurant industry, which lost 10 percent of their 98,000 restaurants in August.

James Rilett, the group’s spokesman, said: “A lot are just hanging by their fingertips, we still think about 50 per cent of independents will close if things don’t change soon.”
