P.E.I. Based Company to Produce mRNA Vaccines

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada has relied on foreign sources to import mRNA vaccines for its residents. Now a Charlottetown-based BioVectra has expanded to manufacture mRNA vaccines with help from the federal and provincial governments. The announcement was made Thursday morning, by Federal Innovation, Science, and Industry Minister Francois- Philippe Champagne in Charlottetown.

The company BioVectra is receiving $39.8 million from the federal government’s Biomanufacturing and Life Sciences Strategy to assist with the expansion. The provincial government will be pitching in another $10 million toward the $79.6 million projects. The plan is to be able to produce up to 160 million doses of mRNA vaccine per year. It will also generate another 125 jobs at Biovectra, split between P.E.I. and Nova Scotia.

BioVectra CEO, Oliver Technow said “BioVectra is well poised to make the production of mRNA therapeutics in our country a reality,… With more than 50 years of expertise, we have a proven record of pushing the boundaries of our capabilities to meet our global consumers’ challenges. This expansion is a significant yet natural evolution for us.”
