The History of New Tecumseth
In the early history of New Tecumseth, different indigenous groups settled in the area. Groups like the Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Ojibwe lived in the area.
Subsequently, European people settled in the area. These settlers founded three communities of note: Alliston, Beeton, Tottenham.
In 1847, William Fletcher settled and built a mill on the banks of the Boyne River. Fletcher’s mill became the focal point of the town of Alliston. By 1869, 175 people lived there.
Beeton got its name in 1874. The name came from D. A. Jones, who was the first commercial honey producer in Canada.
During the 1820s, A family of Irish immigrants, the Tottens, lent their name to Tottenham. Business flourished in the town and by 1877 the population grew to 700.
The Turn of the Century in New Tecumseth
At the turn of the century, the communities that make up New Tecumseth were bustling with industry. Many manufacturing facilities operated in the area.
During this period, flour mills and brickyards among other industries called Alliston home. The population of the town grew to around 1,300 by 1910.
In the 1920s the establishment of the Steven Memorial Hospital in Alliston was made possible thanks to a donation from T. P. Loblaw. Loblaw was the founder of the grocery chain, and he was from the New Tecumseth area.
Another famous person from the New Tecumseth area is Sir Fredrick Banting. He was born in Alliston and became world-famous after he discovered insulin in 1922 and won the Nobel Prize.

Suburban Development in New Tecumseth
During the 1950s and 1960s, there was a boom in population and construction in the New Tecumseth area.
In the 1980s, Honda saw New Tecumseth as the ideal spot to establish a manufacturing plant. In 1986, they opened a facility in Alliston, which is still a major employer.
Later, in the 1990s, the area’s growth in population spurred the amalgamation of Alliston, Beeton, and Tottenham into the Town of New Tecumseth.
The name “Tecumseth” came from a First Nations leader named Tecumseh. He was a Shawnee chief who sided with the British in the War of 1812.

Secondly, the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board manages English Catholic schools.
Thirdly, the Conseil Scolaire Catholique MonAvenir offer French Catholic schools in New Tecumseth.
Transportation
Getting around New Tecumseth is easy. However, the rural nature of the town lends more readily to driving your own car rather than public transportation.
That being said, there are many options available in New Tecumseth.
TRAVELLING BY CAR
For commuters looking to travel outside of New Tecumseth, Highway 89 and Highway 9 are two of the most important roadways in the town.
Highway 89, known locally as Victoria Street and Young Street, travels east to west. The highway connects New Tecumseth with Shelburn in the west. In the east, the highway connects the town to Highway 400.
Highway 9 connects New Tecumseth to Orangeville in the west. In the east, the highway provides a link to Highway 400.
Highway 400 is the most important road link to the GTA in the south and Barrie in the north.
PUBLIC TRANSIT
Meanwhile, public transit is limited but available in New Tecumseth.
Within the town, the municipality runs a community transportation program. This service provides transportation for seniors and people with disabilities.
For commuters, GO Transportation is one of the most important transit services. Commuters catch GO buses at the Highway 9 & Highway 400 Park and Ride. At the same time, GO trains can be caught at the Bradford GO Station.
