The historic town of Ajax begins in the early 1940s as a small rural community with about 800 residents. In 1941, the Canadian government acquired over 12,000 acres in eastern Pickering Township to establish the Defense Industries Limited (DIL) munitions plant in support of World War II efforts, signifying a transformative period for the area.
