    The History of Ajax

    The historic town of Ajax begins in the early 1940s as a small rural community with about 800 residents. In 1941, the Canadian government acquired over 12,000 acres in eastern Pickering Township to establish the Defense Industries Limited (DIL) munitions plant in support of World War II efforts, signifying a transformative period for the area. Following the war, the plant, after producing millions of shells and employing over 9,000 workers, catalyzed the development of the surrounding community. As a result, his emerging town was named in honor of the HMS Ajax. This war vessel played a big role in pivotal WWII naval battles like, the Battle of the River Plate, the Battle of Crete, the Battle of Malta and was later a supply escort in the siege of Tobruk.

    After the war, the University of Toronto repurposed the DIL plant for engineering education, training more than 7,000 students by 1949. By the 1950s, as the focus shifted from industrial to residential development, Ajax’s attractive lakeside location and comprehensive planning drew new residents, resulting in significant population growth. Officially becoming a town separate from Pickering in 1955, with its own governance and education systems, Ajax transitioned from a wartime industrial center to a flourishing, integrated community.

    Driving in Ajax

    In addition, distinctive feature of Ajax is its diverse demographic composition, with more than half of its population, 64.6%, identifying as visible minorities. This diversity is highlighted by the significant representation of South Asian individuals, who constitute 26.1% of the population, followed by Black (16.8%), and Chinese communities (3.6%). The rest of the population includes a 42.1% representation of white individuals, a 0.6% presence of Indigenous people, and 7.7% belonging to other visible minority groups.
