    Overview

    Davenport is a quiet centrally located neighbourhood in Toronto who’s history dates back thousands of years. The area features modest single homes, convenient public transit and a close proximity to downtown Toronto. Running down Christie Street to Shaw Street, just south of Davenport Road, are the Frankel Lambert housing co-operative. It contains private homes as well as Cityhome rental units and senior citizen accommodation.

    History

    Davenport Road was used as an ancient foot path by the First Nations people seeking an overland route between the Humber and Don Rivers. The pathway continued to be important for French Fur traders in the 1600’s. It also supported the first European settlers who arrived in the 1790’s. One of the earliest settlers was English John McGill who was the original owner of ‘Davenport’ house. 

    Up until 1861, Davenport was mainly a farming community until 1861 when the Northern Railway opened just south of the area. The railway inspired different industries and the small village was named Davenport. The town was then amalgamated into the West Toronto Junction in 1889.

    During the early 1800s, Toronto was mostly covered in forest and it was challenging to travel from one community to another. Residential development began shortly after 1909 when Davenport was annexed by the City of Toronto. 

    Real Estate

    You can find rows of attached late Victorian style houses in Davenport that were built between 1900 and 1929. A portion of these homes have been replaced with newer semi-detached homes. 

    In the 1980’s, the Frankel Lambert townhouses were built. These homes include brick and wood exteriors, front porches, and private backyards. There are some low and medium rise apartment buildings for seniors located along Christie Street and Shaw Street.

    Lifestyle

    Davenport Road has a small selection of convenience-type stores which are within walking distance of this neighbourhood. The shops spread across Dupont Street which include the Galleria Mall, a major grocery store, a hardware centre and a variety of restaurants. 

    Residents in this neighbourhood are near the Wallace Emerson Community Centre at 1260 Dufferin Street. The facility includes an indoor pool, a gymnasium, and four floodlit tennis courts that double as an artificial ice rink in the wintertime. Hillcrest Park is located at the north-west corner of Davenport Road and Christie Street. The park has four tennis courts, a wading poll, and a children’s playground.

    Melita Park is located in the neighbourhood and has a playground, wading pool, swings, a playwall, and bocce courts. There is also a Toronto Public Library in Davenport that offers programs for children and preschoolers.   

    Transportation

    Residents in Davenport have ample access to public transportation. There is a network of bus lines that run on Dufferin, Dovercourt, Ossington, Bathurst Dupont, and Davenport. These bus routes connect passengers to the St.Clair West or Dupont subway stations. Motorists are only ten to fifteen minutes from downtown and roughly twenty minutes from Toronto’s major expressway.
