    Guildwood Village

Guildwood Village is a neighbourhood located in Toronto known for its beautiful surroundings and inclusive community.

    History

The area’s history centers around the Guild Inn, a retreat for artists and craftsmen founded in 1932 by Rosa and Spencer Clark. During World War II, the inn was used as a naval base and military hospital, but returned to the Clarks after the war and regained its popularity. In the 1950s, the Clarks were forced to sell a portion of their property to developers who built the current Guildwood Village neighbourhood. The remaining land was later purchased by the Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to ensure its preservation.

    Lifestyle

The Guild Inn, situated on 90 acres of property and overlooking the Scarborough Bluffs, is a major landmark in the neighbourhood and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can enjoy the historic architectural walking tour and rustic woodland nature trail. The community association regularly hosts events, including Guildwood Day, a neighbourhood celebration held in June featuring pancake breakfast, games, races, crafts, a parade, and evening barbeque.

The Guildwood Shopping Plaza, located at the southeast corner of Guildwood Parkway and Livingston Road, serves the immediate needs of the residents with an upscale atmosphere and friendly neighborhood appeal. The shopping plaza offers a variety of stores, including a large supermarket, pharmacy, barbershop, bakery, bank, beauty salon, travel agency, postal outlet, veterinarian clinic, and professional and medical offices. The Guildwood Public Library is also located in the plaza.

Recreational options in Guildwood Village include the picturesque gardens of the Guild Inn, decorated with sculptures and architectural remnants from Toronto’s past. A promenade on these grounds leads to the Scarborough Bluffs, overlooking Lake Ontario. The Guildwood Park also features nature trails that wind their way through a majestic century-old Carolinian forest. The parkland of the Guild Inn is a focal point of the community, with important architectural artifacts from across Toronto, which is closed currently, and the Inn has future plans under review. In the summertime, the Guild Inn hosts an Art in the Park show as well as live outdoor theater productions.

    Real Estate

Housing options in Guildwood Village include a mix of homes, such as bungalows, split-level, and detached two-storey homes built in the 1950s and 1960s as well as newer custom-designed homes. The neighbourhood has a tree-lined street with many houses featuring front porches that provide a view of the gardens, and the south side of Guildwood Parkway commands a spectacular view of Lake Ontario. A bylaw was in place when the neighbourhood was developed, stipulating that tall trees could not be removed from properties, so many of the trees in the neighbourhood are much older, contributing to the picturesque tree canopy found throughout the neighbourhood. The stretch of Guildwood Parkway west of Livingston Road has a mix of townhouses, multi-plex dwellings, and low-rise apartment buildings. The entrance of the neighborhood has a luxury condominium apartment building.
