In 1816, it was officially recognized as a town and over the next few decades, its population exploded as waves of immigrants came to work in its many factories. The city became known as “The Ambitious City” for its rapid growth.

    The History of Hamilton, Ontario

The first westerner to visit site of modern-day Hamilton was French explorer René-Robert Cavelier in 1669. However, significant settlement only arrived in Hamilton with the loyalists fleeing the American Rebellion in 1778.

Hamilton gets its name from George Hamilton, who procured several landing holdings which subsequently became the town. He laid out the original town in 1815 on the plain between the waterfront and the Niagara Escarpment ridge, colloquially known today as “The Mountain.”

In its early years, Hamilton’s growth was overshadowed by the nearby community of Dundas. When the Burlington Canal opened in 1830 and linked Hamilton Harbour to the Lake, the city developed rapidly.

This waterway access led to Hamilton’s ascension to a nationally-known port, rail hub, and steel manufacturing centre. This reputation remains to this day, although the economy has diversified as steel manufacturing declined.
