History
Hillcrest is a Toronto neighbourhood that was first settled in the 1840’s by Robert Turner, a reformer from England. Where Hillcrest Park is today was the former Turner house, named “Bracondale”. By 1884 the small village became known as Bracondale Village as the settlement began to grow. The residents in this area at the time mostly consisted of farmers and a few stores.
The City of Toronto annexed Bracondale Village in 1909. The Bracondale house was sold to the City in 1937 and was demolished to make room for Hillcrest Park. The Wychwood TTC Barns outlived their usefulness and started to go vacant in the 1980s. A non-for-profit urban development organization called Artscape Began a massive restoration on the Barns. The structures were built between 1913 and 1921 and take up 60,000 square feet of space.
