    Overview

    Riverside is a Toronto neighbourhood that has undergone a gentrification but has been able to maintain its gritty urban charm. The area is a fantastic example of a neighbourhood that has used its history to move towards a new era of prosperity and growth. Riverside has had award-winning beautification and revitalization projects. They included new pedestrian lighting and façade restoration.

    The neighbourhood features some of Toronto’s  more remarkable century old buildings that adds a perfect backdrop. There are a plethora of shops and restaurants that recently opened in this area. Some of the more notable neighbourhood landmarks are the New Broadview House Hotel, Ralph Thornton Community Centre, Toronto’s east Chinatown located at Broadview and Gerrard. 

    History

    Riverside made its first appearance on an 1882 map of Toronto titled: Goads Insurance Plan of the City. Riverside was annexed by the City of Toronto in 1884 and prior to this Riverside was mostly working class people. Many of these residents worked nearby the railway or one of the local market gardens.

    Some of the original labourers cottages that can still be seen today. Many of the Victorian and Edwardian homes were built during the annexation of Riverside. In 1980, South Riverdale business embraced a new identity as Toronto made the area a business improvement area. The new name of the village of South Riverdale, but in 2005 the local B.I.A. decided to revert the name back to Riverside.

    Real Estate

    Real estate in Riverside is considerably affordable by Toronto standards. There are a variety of condominium living options available in this neighbourhood. They range from trendy hard and soft lofts to condominium townhomes. Most of the homes in this area are heritage homes and include Victorian, Second Empire or Edwardian architecture. 

    The older semi-detached and attached townhomes are quite narrow and generally do not include off street parking. There are not too many detached homes in this area. 100 years ago, this quaint urban neighbourhood was the land of opportunity for Toronto home-buyers.

    Lifestyle

    The Riverside Business Improvement Area takes up 10 blocks along Queen St. East. The streetscape features a fine collection of heritage buildings which makes up a venue for more than 120 shops and services. Many of the stores are independently owned which include funky fashion boutiques, home decor and gift shops. There is also a variety of food artisan shops as the area built a reputation as a culinary destination.

    There is a multi-purpose community facility located at 765 Queen Street East called the Ralph Thornton Town Hall and Cultural Centre. At this location, you will find a computer resource area, recreation and educational programs, and meeting space for a variety of neighbourhood events. The Jimmie Simpson Recreation Centre located at 870 Queen St. East has an indoor swimming pool and multi-purpose rooms. There is also an outdoor ice rink located directly beside the main building. 

    Transportation

    The Riverside neighbourhood is only 2.5 kilometres from downtown Toronto. Motorists can easily access the Don Valley Parkway which is just west of the area. Those looking for public transit, can take the 501 Queen streetcar route which crosses the Queen Street Viaduct over the Don River. The route interchanges with the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line at Queen and Osgoode stations.
