    South Hill

    Overview

The South Hill Toronto neighbourhood is centrally located and close to the business and entertainment districts. It is conveniently situated near many of the city’s highly recognized public, private and Catholic schools. This neighbourhood may not have the same popularity as Rosedale or Forest Hill, but it still is considered one of the elite Toronto neighbourhoods.

    History

This Toronto neighbourhood is defined by Avenue Road Hill as it forms a historic land formation. It is the location of the former shoreline of ancient Lake Iroquois which receded into present day Lake Ontario over 12,000 years ago. The remnants of Lake Iroquois left behind a dense forest filled with ponds, creeks, and waterfalls that filled Avenue Roade Hill until the 1900’s.

The natural beauty of this area made it attractive for wealthy Toronto landowners. By the mid 1800’s  South Hill was sprinkled with a variety of mansions. Some of the famous mansions were the “Oaklands”, the gingerbread mansion overlooking Avenue Road. “Spadina House” at 285 Spadina Road and “Casa Loma”, the 98 room dream home of Sir Henry William Pellatt.

    Real Estate

The South Hill Toronto neighbourhood has some of the largest houses in the city. The homes located on the crest of the Avenue Road hill offers spectacular views of downtown Toronto. Some even offer a distant glimpse of Lake Ontario. The first homes constructed in this neighbourhood were built between 1890 and 1920. There are still a number of townhouses that were constructed within the last twenty years. The neighbourhood also includes luxury rental apartment buildings on both sides of Avenue Road.

    Lifestyle
