St. James Town Community Profile from Toronto’s Top Realtor

    Overview

The Toronto neighbourhood St. James Town contains eighteen high-rise apartment buildings with almost seven thousand units. In just the small area of 32.1 acres, this town has over fifteen thousand residents. The demographics in this area make St. James Town one of the most densely populated census tract in Canada.

In 1997 the former City of Toronto council approved St. James Town for A Community Action Plan which aims to revitalize St. James Town through initiatives. These initiatives include the building of a multi-service community centre, improvements to parks, and the maintenance and repair of St. James Town buildings.

    History

This area began as a desirable upper-middle-class neighbourhood in the 1870s. It was filled with scenic Victorian houses and remained popular with Toronto home purchases until the 1900s. In 1953 St. James Town hit a turning point as the City of Toronto announced major zoning amendments for the downtown core. This increased building coverage in the area making it an attractive target for private developers.

By the end of the 1950’s the entire housing stock of this community was demolished in order to build Toronto’s first high-rise residential apartment towers. The St. James Town apartments were originally designed as a neighbourhood for upwardly mobile singles and professionals.

    Real Estate

The apartment buildings in St. James Town include units ranging in size from bachelor to three bedroom apartments. The area has fourteen privately owned buildings which many are named after large Canadian cities. Most of these buildings offer typical marketplace rents. There are four apartment buildings in St. James Town owned by the Metro Toronto Housing Authority. They offer rents targeted towards income.

The community contains swimming pools and children’s playground. The Rose Avenue Community Centre is open to the public both during the evenings and on weekends. St. James Town is closely located near many city parks like Wellesley Park, Riverdale Park West, Winchester Park, and Allan Gardens.
