Davisville Village
Overview
Davisville Village is a centrally located neighbourhood that is known for being family oriented. The community is filled with many singles, young couples and families. Residents have ample access to recreational facilities, outstanding shopping districts, and an active nightlife. With revitalization planned, people in this community will be able to enjoy aquatic centre and other activities.
History
This Toronto neighbourhood was named after John Davis who immigrated to Canada from Staffordshire, England in 1840. He served as Davisville’s first postmaster and helped found the Davisville Public School. The Englishman was also the Village’s largest employer, as he operated the Davis Pottery.
The southern side of Davisville was subdivided in the 1860’s on land owned mainly by the Davis family. The northern part of the village was owned by the church and it remained undeveloped until 1911. It was sold to the Dovercourt Land and Building Company which also oversaw the development of the Lawrence Park neighbnourhood.
Real Estate
A good portion of the homes in Davisville were built in the 1920’s and 1930’s.The houses located west of Mount Pleasant Road are mainly large two and three-storey English Cottage and Edwardian-style homes. In this area, you can also find a number of duplexes and walk-up apartment buildings.
When travelling east of Mount Pleasant Road, many of the homes are smaller detached houses, semi-detached houses and bungalows. In this part of the neighbourhood includes a few of the historical homes from the late 1800’s. There are also a growing number of custom built homes.
If you are looking for newer condominium apartment buildings, they are located on Merton and Balliol Streets and along Eglinton Avenue. Davisville Avenue includes a plethora of rental high-rise apartment buildings.
Lifestyle
Residents living in Davisville Village are in proximity to many different shopping opportunities. The main shopping district in this neighbouhood is known as Mount Pleasant Village. You can find some of Toronto’s best restaurants and cafes as well as specialty food shops. People from all over the city come to this stretch of stores for antiques and collectables.
There are also shopping areas along Yonge Street, Eglinton Avenue and Bayview Avenue. This area has a variety of gift shops, clothing and accessory stores, bakeries, cafes, and coffee shops. Professional and medical offices operate in the small commercial buildings in this corridor.
Davisville Park serves as the social and recreational centre of this neighbourhood. During the day, it is enjoyed by preschoolers using the playground and wading pool. The Park has a total of six tennis courts that are used by the Davisville Tennis Club on evenings and weekends. Right beside the tennis courts is a baseball diamond that hosts a variety of different children and adult leagues.
Transportation
Residents of Davisville Village have easy access to public transportation. There is local bus services on Eglinton Avenue, Davisville Avenue, Mount Pleasant Road, and Yonge Streets. These bus routes will connect passengers to the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line. Residents are within walking distance of the Davisville and the Eglinton subway stations at Yonge Street.
Motorists can quickly access downtown Toronto using either Mount Pleasant Road or Yonge Street. Toronto’s highways and expressways are situated 20 minutes from the neighbourhood.
