Liberty Village Community Profile From the Top Realtor in Toronto.

    Overview

This Toronto neighbourhood, Liberty Village, is a 43-acre well-planned community that combines residential, commercial, and retail uses. The area attracts young professionals in media, high-tech, and design businesses who live and work in the urban centre. The red brick Victorian industrial architecture dominates most of the streets in this neighbourhood. Tall chimneys that project from some of the older buildings act as neighbourhood landmarks.

    History

During the late 1700s and early 1800s, Liberty Village was part of the Garrison Common. This was a military fortification for the Town of York which later would become Toronto. During the 1850s, the arrival of the railway brought industry and led to the building of warehouses and factories. Many of these older buildings serve as funky lofts, hip/live workspaces, and studio offices.

The Liberty Village name refers to the Central Prison and the Mercer Reformatory for Women that were here between the 1800s and 1900s. Liberty Street was given its name as it was the first ground prisoners would walk on once they were granted release.

    Real Estate

Those looking for newer townhomes can find them throughout Liberty Village and along King Street West. Hard lofts in restored industrial buildings feature soaring ceilings, huge windows and exposed brick. This neighbourhood contains new concrete and glass condo towers which provide an ultra-modern contrast to the older buildings in the area.

    Lifestyle

Liberty Village accrued most of its reputation as a destination spot for those seeking unique furniture and design stores. There is also a range of art galleries, hip coffee shops and urban fusion restaurants. The Dominion supermarket borders a shopping strip that has a video store, a pet supply store, a dry cleaner and a bank.

Those looking for recreational opportunities can take advantage of a nearby waterfront trail. It is frequently enjoyed by walkers, joggers, cyclists, and in-line skaters. Living in this neighbourhood puts you just minutes from Toronto’s Entertainment District and world-class sporting venues like Air Canada Centre and Rogers Centre.

    Transportation

Residents in this neighbourhood have streetcar lines on Queen and King streets. They provide quick and easy access to the downtown financial and entertainment districts. The Go Transit Exhibition Station is within walking distance of this neighbourhood. Motorists can reach downtown in minutes or easily access the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard. These roadways give access to a network of highways leading out of the downtown core.
