A variety of websites were temporarily unavailable today including New York Times, Amazon, and Reddit. These websites were knocked out due to an issue at the cloud computing services provider Fastly. Other websites impacted by the outage were CNN, Paypal, and Spotify, which are all high-traffic sites.

The outage tracking website Downdetector.com reported each site saw downtimes from a few minutes to around an hour. The cloud-based company Fastly said, “the issue has been identified and a fix has been applied.”

The company helps websites reach their consumers faster by providing less congested routers, and they went public in 2019. When the outages happened many website error messages would say “Degraded Performance.” pointing the blame at Fastly. News publishers had to get creative and workaround these outages. A popular tech website Verge used Google Docs to report news, and U.K. technology editor at Guardian used Twitter to create a thread on the issue.
