    Laboratories across the U.S. are reporting long processing delays due to a surge of coronavirus tests. Experts say the delays are undercutting the effectiveness of the pandemic response.

    With a total of 3.9 million infections reported on Wednesday and new cases rising, the delays create problems for nursing homes struggling to keep the virus out. Care facilities have an especially hard time as workers are being kept off the job while awaiting test results. The labs themselves are also having a hard time dealing with backed-up workloads. 

    Some labs can take weeks to return Covid-19 results, intensifying fears that asymptomatic people can be spreading the virus if they don’t self-quarantine while they wait for their test results.
