Since the pandemic hit there has been a spike in speeding penalties, stunt driving, and other traffic violations. Toronto, Ontario insists on raising penalties and fines to deter drivers from driving recklessly. The legislation was introduced on Monday, if passed, there will be an increase in vehicle impoundment time as well as lengthening license suspensions.
COVID-19 has resulted in fewer motorists on the street which motivated people to drive faster. Between March 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, police handed out 796 stunt driving charges, doubling the numbers during the same period of time in 2019.
Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney strongly supports the Moving Ontarians More Safely Act and says “Driving is a privilege and those that threaten the safety of others have no place on our roads.”
The government also plans to implement the Towing and Storage Safety and Enforcement. This will set new standards for tow truck drivers, tow operators, and vehicle storage operators. They will all need to be certified, adhere to customer protection and roadside behaviours, with penalties for noncompliance.
