In Canada, it is common for nuts and other foods to be banned in schools for the safety of the students. An international panel organized by McMaster University recommended a new set of guidelines for all Canadian schools.
The new guidelines would ease food bans and instead would train the staff to be able to help an individual during an allergic reaction. All schools will also need access to epinephrine or EpiPens so it is possible to treat anaphylaxis (allergic reaction). The study and guidelines were published on Wednesday in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology
The panel did not find enough evidence to support that food restrictions work. Rather it can contribute to reduced diligence among individuals in schools. In addition, schools that have allergen-restricted zones can isolate students as they may be forced to eat separately.
