Last week, China launched the Long March-5B Y2 rocket, transporting a core module for China’s space station Tianhe. Being China’s largest rocket, they used the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province.
The initial launch was a success but the first stage of the rocket is expected to enter orbit and fall towards Earth. Usually, rockets function the same way, they launch in two stages, the first stage may come back in the planet at a known location or could stay in orbit until burning up upon re-entry.
Since the Long March 5B Y2 rocket is very large, space experts are predicting for components of the rocket to crash on Earth instead of burning up. The estimated date of impact is May 9, 2021, but Henry Mcdowell an astronomer at Harvard University says “The odds are this thing will break up over the ocean”.
