Health Canada approves the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children ages 12 and up. The vaccine was initially for use in individuals 16 years of age and up. This makes Canada the first country in the world to clear giving shots to this age group.

Children will be receiving the same dose regimen as adults. Which is based on the results of Pfizer-BioNTech’s clinical trial that involved 2,260 children between the ages of 12-15. The test was conducted in the United States and found the vaccine to be 100 percent effective in children in that age group.

Health Canada has been contemplating their decision since the middle of April. Dr. Supriya Sharma said “The most commonly reported side effects were temporary and mild, like a sore arm, chills or fever”. Usually, a vaccine review process is much longer but Health Canada was able to quicken it because of an emergency order.
