In April, the jobless rates in Canada increased for the first time since January lockdowns. Around 207,000 jobs in Canada’s economy were lost due to recurring government-ordered lockdowns. These lockdowns had a negative impact on businesses and forced some to lay off workers.
Out of the 207,000 jobs lost, Statistics Canada reported on Friday that 129,000 were full-time positions and the other 78,000 were part-time jobs. Roughly half of the jobs lost were among younger workers between 15-24. The national unemployment rate increased to 8.1 percent from 7.5 percent the month before.
The job sectors that experienced the most job loss were retail, food services, and information, culture, and recreation. Economists were predicting job losses to occur in April, but their estimate fell short at 175,000 losses expected.
