Prince Edward County located in rural southern Ontario has an average house price of $820,000. For a 1-bedroom rental, the average price is $1,464 a month. This makes hiring seasonal staff for businesses much more difficult.
Samantha Parsons, co-owner of Parsons Brewing Company said she has lost potential staff due to the expensive cost of living. Often the co-owner would have to assist in helping the employee find an affordable living space. During this year, Parsons had to co-sign a lease on a house for employees to ensure they take the job.
The county has been a popular tourist destination for many years. With the pandemic influencing people to migrate away from the city it has pushed house prices even higher.
