Canadians living in Ontario will no longer be able to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine as a first dose. This comes after an increase in reports of rare blood clots among people who took the vaccine. Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.

Before the announcement, individuals aged 40 and up were being offered the AstraZeneca vaccine across the country. Research from the Cheif Health Protection and Emergency Preparedness Officer Dr. Jessica Hopkins, claims one in 60,000 people who received the vaccine were induced with blood clots.

Officials still say the specific vaccine does provide beneficial protection from illness and hospitalizations related to COVID-19. But Dr. Williams says “it makes sense to pause AstraZeneca, because the risk of severe outcomes with VITT (blood clots) shouldn’t be underestimated”.
