Moderna made an announcement Tuesday, stating its COVID-19 vaccine will strongly protect children 12 and up. The company is set to apply for authorization to use the vaccine on youth in North America in the coming month. If approved, Moderna will become the second choice for this age group in the United States.
Moderna studied over 3,700 12- to 17-year-olds before coming to their conclusion. First, they found the vaccine initiated the same type of immune response in kids as it does in adults. This included similar side effects such as sore arm, headache, and fatigue. Lastly, the company said the vaccine seems to be 93 per cent effective two weeks after administering the first shot.
Even though children are less likely to get seriously ill from coronavirus, they contribute to 14 per cent of the total cases in the U.S. Due to the U.S. having a vast vaccine supply, many teens took the opportunity to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as soon as they were eligible. Which is part of an effort to get kids back in school next year. Both vaccine companies started testing on kids ages 11 down to 6- month-old babies using smaller dose sizes.
