Today, Japan announced they would extend the coronavirus state of emergency in Tokyo and other areas for another 20 days. This happens as infections are still not slowing down and the country is set to host the Olympic Games in less than 2 months.
Originally the current state of emergency was supposed to end next Monday which affects the capital and eight other metropolitan areas. The hardest-hit area in western Japan, Osaka is still “overburdened” said in a statement by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. Many hospitals in some areas of Japan are still overflowing with COVID-19 patients and are hitting new highs.
The new extension covers nine regions from Hokkaido in the north to Fukuoka in the south. Organizers from the Olympic committee must decide whether or not to allow fans during the event around June 20. Media reports say vaccinations will be prioritized for Japanese athletes around that time as well.
