The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens are set to play game 7 of the first-round playoffs tonight. Scotiabank Arena will let invited fans attend if they have been fully vaccinated for at least 2 weeks. There will be around 550 invited healthcare workers that are all fully vaccinated.
The decision was made by Doug Ford, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Toronto Public Health, and hospital administrators. In the news release, Ford commented on the number of people to be “well below the arena’s capacity,”. He further explains that with everyone being fully vaccinated and still following COVID-19 procedures, they “can put these special fans in the stands safely and with minimal risk.”
The decision contradicts Ford’s announcement over the weekend saying they would not permit any fans into Scotiabank Arena. On Saturday, Quebec officials let 2,500 masked fans watch game 6. The difference for Game 7 is the Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment will be covering the costs and will offer a free jersey for the healthcare workers.
