Ontario Government has said schools will remain closed to in-person learning for the remainder of the academic year. Doug Ford also announced that the province may be able to enter step 1 of its reopening plan sooner than expected. Ford made this announcement with Education Minister Stephen Lecce at Queens Park this afternoon. This was after the meeting with the cabinet.
This contradicts the province’s original decision made on June 14 which promised to reopen classrooms before the economy. Ontario is the only province in Canada that still has schools closed. Ford commented, “It was a hard choice to make, but I will not, and I repeat, I will not take unnecessary risks with our children right now.”
Instead, Ford said we may be able to enter phase 1 of the reopening plan earlier than expected. Phase 1 would allow for outdoor gathering limits to increase to 10 people, the reopening of patios, and non-essential retail to allow 15 per cent capacity.
