Officials in Canada are deciding on a multi-phase approach for reopening the borders. It would first begin with allowing fully vaccinated travellers to enter as soon as this summer. The discussions about reopening the Canada-US border has heated up recently. This comes after vaccinations continue to roll out and frustration increases on the American side about border closures.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau brought up two key factors about the reopening on Monday. Trudeau said the reopening will happen in stages and the first travellers entering Canada must be fully vaccinated. If the vaccinated traveller receives a negative COVID-19 test they will be able to avoid the necessary quarantine.
Many aspects of the reopening plan remains a mystery as officials try to work them out. First is the reopening date itself, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said last month that the first phase could happen in late June as the border restrictions are set to expire. An official, who asked to remain anonymous said he is doubtful that borders can reopen by June and July may be a more accurate estimate.
There are other technical details that still need to be figured out, such as how will individuals show proof of vaccination. Certain officials say it will require, at the least, a vaccination card or another form of evidence.
