Brisbane can officially be named host of the 2032 Olympics when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meets in Tokyo next month. After a board meeting on Thursday Thomas Bach, the IOC president said Brisbane can be awarded hosting rights during the July 21 meeting before the Tokyo Olympics.
This Australian city seemed to already have won the hosting rights as it was put on the fast track in February by being called the “preferred candidate” with no formal opponent. There will be around 100 IOC members at the meeting two days before the opening ceremony. Bach explained that the outcome of hosting rights is “in the hands” of the members, but they usually rubber-stamp all recommendations coming from the leadership.
If Brisbane gets hosting rights, it will become the first Olympic host selected unopposed and under the new system to streamline bid campaigns. This is to make them less costly and lessen the risk of vote-buying. Bach supports the city to host the event because he praises Australia for being a sport-loving country with strong support from layers of government in Brisbane, the state of Queensland, and the federal level.
