During a briefing at Queen’s Park, Thursday, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams said he would consider speeding up Step 2 by “a day or two”. He explained it is possible to move into Step 2 slightly earlier than July 2, but seemed to ignore the idea of it being earlier than that.
Dr. Williams wants to make sure “we’re careful as we go forward.” as “Ther’s an end to the journey in sight,” The province entered Step 1 of its reopening plan on June 11. That date happened to be three days earlier than the originally set date by the government. The reopening plan states Ontario must wait at least 21 days to assess the virus’s trends before easing more restrictions.
Ford said he would only move into Step 2 if Dr. Williams approved it. To enter this next step around 70 per cent of adults must receive at least one dose and 20 per cent fully vaccinated. As of right now, 75 per cent of people in Ontario have the first dose, while 19 per cent have both. Other experts such as Issac Bogoch the infectious disease specialist and member of Ontario’s COVID-19 vaccine task force said flexibility should be used with a reopening plan depending on public health rends.
