Canada will be donating 17.7 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to other countries. The federal ministers said they would be helping low and middle-income countries. This will be part of the COVAX global vaccine-sharing initiative that was co-organized by the WHO, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and Gavi, and The Vaccine Alliance.
The program requires wealthier countries to provide vaccines to low and middle-income countries to ensure they have access to vaccines. This new announcement of delivering vaccines is an additional donation as the Canadian government committed to donating $440 million to COVAX.
The federal government will also be partnering with UNICEF to encourage Canadians to contribute $10 which will help donate vaccine doses. Every donation made by a Canadian will be matched by the federal government, up to a maximum of $10 million. The campaign will end on September 6 and people can donate through UNICEF.
