The Olympic Games are set to begin next week in Tokyo, but it will look pretty different this year. The games were supposed to be in 2020 and the pandemic delayed them until now. The situation in Tokyo has been shifting each week as they try to manage the COVID-19 as well. For this reason, the Olympics are going to look quite unusual this year.
First of all, there will be no spectators at any venue during the international event. Months prior, the plan was to allow 10,000 Japanese fans at each venue. Abroad spectators were not be permitted at the venues at that time. After the state of emergency was announced in Tokyo on July 9, officials said they would not permit any spectators anymore.
Even though the athletes are at the event focusing on their training and competition, they have fun by touring the host city. But this year athletes were given a detailed playbook, which is filled with rules to keep the athletes safe from COVID-19. Some of the rules are that athletes cannot take public transportation unless it’s the only option and athletes must wear masks and practice social distancing.
All medals going to winning athletes will be served on trays. Usually, the medals are placed around the winner’s necks during the medal ceremonies. Several athletes announced they would be dropping out of this year’s Olympics as well. Some of the athletes not going include Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Lebron James, and Bianca Andreescu.
