Environment Canada classified the tornado that damaged a Barrie, Ontario neighbourhood as an EF-2 tornado. It happened on Thursday damaging multiple houses, flipping over cars, and injuring at least 10 people. A Barrie resident Anita Heyworth said, “all I saw was this tunnel going down the street and my trampoline from our backyard spinning in the tunnel, and I’m screaming ‘Duck’ to my children because I was afraid of the glass being shattered.”
The national weather agency said the tornado damage spread across five kilometres long and up to 100 metres wide. They also said the twister had a maximum of 210 km/h wind speeds. There could have been more damage that wasn’t reported outside the city and over Lake Simcoe.
The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre said 10 people were treated at the hospital. 2 of them had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The Mayor of Barrie Jeff Lehman gave his credit to the fast work of emergency responders that rushed to the area. He said Thursday evening “The character of a community is defined by its response to its most difficult days, and this one one of them.”
