On Thursday, Tokyo hit another six-month high in new COVID-19 infections. This comes one day before the Olympic Opening Ceremony which intensified worries of an outbreak during the Games. The specific case count was 1,979 on Thursday being the highest since January 15.
The Prime Minister in Japan, Yoshihide Suga said he is determined to conduct the Games despite Tokyo being under a state of emergency since July 12. However, since then cases have sharply increased each day. The emergency order focuses on banning alcohol sales and shorer hours for restaurants and bars until August 22.
The Games starting tomorrow, have been delayed for a year as the pandemic created roadblocks. Spectators will not be permitted at any venue in the Tokyo area, but a few outlying sites will allow a limited audience. The Japanese government and Suga have been criticized for what some think is favouring the Olympics over the nation’s people. His public support ratings have dropped close to 30 per cent in recent media surveys.
