Discovered in 1812, the Saint-Léonard cave was formed during the ice age with a second passage found in 2017. According to Quebec’s speleological society and the Montreal borough of Saint-Léonard, there are plans to build a new pavilion in the cave. They hope to attract more tourists to Pie XII Park where the cave made international headlines.
In 2017, Luc Le Blanc, a cave expert and member of Spéléo Québec, assisted in the discovery of the new underground passage. Hidden behind limestone walls and formed by the ice age, the discovery boosted the international visibility of this old cave.
The cave was originally found by a farmer in 1812 who used it to store weapons and ammunition during the Upper Canadian Rebellion. Visitors started exploring the cave in 1980 and Le Blanc wants to make the site more accessible. Le Blanc added that Spéléo Québec wants to teach more people about the uniqueness of the ancient cave and what makes it special.
