The 31-year-old from London, Ontario has won the gold medal and set a new Olympic record in the decathlon at Tokyo. Damian Warner finished the last 1,500-metre event in fifth place solidifying himself as the first Canadian to win gold in a decathlon. Warner tallied up a total of 9,018 points from all 10 events in the decathlon. The previous Olympic record was 8,893 points, set by Ashton Eaton of the United States and Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic.
Warner is now also considered the fourth man in history to surpass the 9,000 point mark in a decathlon. The silver medal went to the world record-holder Kevin Mayer of France and the bronze medal went to the Australian Ashley Moloney. Pierce LePage, the only other Canadian in this event finished with a total of 8,604 points. This ranked him fifth in the group but was also a personal-best score for himself.
Warner won the bronze medal back in the 2016 Rio Olympics and only showed improvement this year. He set decathlon records for long jump, 110-metre hurdle, and tied his decathlon world mark in the 100-metres. Warner posed for photos with the Candian flag draped around him and a massive smile on his face after his achievement.
