The Canadian women’s soccer team takes the gold medal after a victory over Sweden that went to penalty kicks. The game was tied at one by the end of regulation and extra time, Canada was superior in the penalty kicks to win the game 3-2. Both teams scored their first two of five tries, but on Sweden’s third shot, Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe stopped Joanna Andersson’s shot.
This set up Julia Grosso to win the game with her shot. She shot to the left and the Swedish goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl got a piece of it but no enough to stop it from going in the net. The Canadian team instantly ran to the field where Grosso and Labbe were already celebrating. This was Canada’s first time making an appearance in the Olympic women’s soccer final.
Canada has one back-to-back bronze in this event prior to the Tokyo Games. One in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics and one in the 2012 London Games. Sweden won silver in the 2016 Olympics as well after a loss to Germany. Stina Blackestnius from Sweden and Jessie Fleming from Canada were the only players to score in regulation time. Sweden held a 1-0 lead from the 34th minute until Canada equalized it in the 67th minute.
