A task force in charge of rebranding Ryerson University will soon make their recommendations. Ryerson University is named after Egerton Ryerson but his recently revealed history of racism and role in residential schools has provoked the institution to rebrand. With students ready to begin this fall, the task force will announce what actions should be taken to deal with the change in names.
Egerton Ryerson had connections to racist ideologies that concerned first nation students, staff, and community members for years. He is also said to have advanced ideas seen by many as the primary foundations of Canada’s residential school system. After the discovery of all the unmarked burial sites, the university felt even more pressure to address their name and do something about it.
Some experts say the institution rebranding itself can actually pay off for the school in many ways. It could improve their reputation, donations, marketing, and new partnerships as many on-campus “believe change is the only way forward.” At the beginning of the summer, more than 300 Ryerson staff members signed an open letter that called for the school to change its name.
