On Monday, two more wildfires broke out in Greece triggering evacuation alerts for areas to the southeast and northwest of Athens the Greek capital. Initiated from strong winds, the first fire broke out Monday morning in the Keratea region, which swiftly burned through shrubland and headed to the national park in the Sounion area.
So far a total of three settlements have been ordered to evacuate as firefighters work to battle the fires. Dozens of men from the fire department were sent to help, as well as six water-dropping planes and four helicopters. The second blaze started on the other side of the capital in the Vilia area during the afternoon. This triggered the evacuation of three more settlements.
Greece has experienced hundred of wildfires for about two weeks and they are under the country’s most severe heatwave in decades. This is causing forests to turn bone-dry which makes them much easier to catch on fire. More than tens of thousands of hectares of forests and farmlands have been destroyed. On top of that many homes and businesses have been destroyed.
